Commissioning a sculpture is an exciting and personal experience, which is why it’s critical that you are involved in the entire process. Here’s how it works.
I will spend time with you listening and learning about the person you wish to capture in a three-dimensional work of art. My goal is to create an overarching narrative with deeper meaning that I can bring to life. With sculpture, there are
many opportunities to layer details and communicate emotion through gesture and symbology.
Placement of the finished sculpture is an important factor and will influence a few factors such as dimensions, base, and materials. If you are unsure, we can walk through this and discuss other considerations like lighting, display elevation, placement and background that best highlights your sculpture.
A few days after our initial meeting, I will send you a Commission Proposal based on our discussion and your budget. In the Proposal, I will define the overall design, size, material, and final finish surface and patina of the sculpture.
The Proposal will include initial sketches of the sculpture, along with sample photos depicting overall style and color of the finished work of art.
The Proposal will also include a detailed cost estimate and timeline.
Once you approve the Commission Proposal, I will email a contract outlining the details we’ve discussed and the timeline for completion.
At this time, you will be invoiced for half of your total payment. Once the paperwork is signed and I receive your downpayment, I will start working.
At various points in the sculpting process, I will invite you into the studio (or schedule video calls, if you prefer) so you can provide feedback. This is the collaborative part of the process where I rely on you for your thoughts on sculpted details. Later, I will also ask for your thoughts on patina and finish. Throughout, I will send progress photos at various important stages.
Once the sculpture is completed in clay and ready to cast, I will email you additional photos of the work. You may want to come for another studio visit at this exciting point.
Upon your approval, I will have a mold made of the work, which will be sent to the foundry where it will be cast in the material specified in the contract. At this point, the final payment is due, and shipping arrangements will be made.
I look forward to hearing from you and the opportunity to collaborate on creating a unique work of art!
Laurie recently started working on a new commissioned piece for the National Museum of Marine Corps! The piece is a larger-than-life sculpture of Minerva, Goddess of Wisdom and War, and will be displayed in the Hall of Valor. It will bring the Medal of Honor into three-dimensional form, celebrating the valor of those who sacrificed.
