Minerva is deliberately placed on uneven, rocky, unsafe ground symbolizing the condition of our world past and present. Her movement is both defensive and offensive as she engages. The shield of the Great Seal of the United States is in her right hand, the 13 stripes on the shield represents the thirteen original colonies. In her left hand, there is a fasces: a tightly bound bundle of wooden rods with a lethal axe protruding – an ancient symbol of authority and unity.

In a swift and offensive move, Minerva propels her body forward to engage the enemy. Simultaneously, with deliberate and exacting force her right foot comes down hard, crushing and decapitating a serpent, (the enemy) one of 5 which are intent on destroying her. You can feel the danger and trepidation as they slither towards her, their forked tongues picking up her scent. She is undaunted.

Minerva’s expression exudes a sense powerful intent coupled with focused determination as she continues to fight and defend. She is fierce, wise and logical, symbolized by the Owl of Wisdom which is center on her crown tiara. Her exquisite gown is classic, regal and elegant. The voluminous fabric compliments her strong athletic form. The straps of her draping bodice are held taut by laurel and oak leaf broaches. The laurel leaf symbolizing victory and achievement, the oak a symbolizing endurance, justice and honesty. You can feel the energy of the piece as Minerva’s hair is blown back by ferocious winds which attempts to slow her down, but Minerva resists and prevails. Her scarf captures this moment in dramatic fashion as it billows in the air, cascading backwards. Minerva is unstoppable, triumphant, and inspirational. A tribute to our Medal of Honor recipients, and to the millions of Sailors and Marines who have served and continue to serve.
